Hanif, britischer Schriftsteller und Drehbuchautor, * Bromley (bei London) 5. 12. 1954; schreibt nach Tätigkeit als Dramatiker (»The mother country«, 1980) seit Mitte der 1980er-Jahre Filmdrehbücher (»My beautiful laundrette«, 1985; dt. »Mein wunderbarer Waschsalon«) sowie seit Anfang der 1990er-Jahre Romane (»The Buddha of Suburbia«, 1990; dt. »Der Buddha aus der Vorstadt«; »Intimacy», 1999; dt. «Rastlose Nähe«) und Erzählungen. Thematisierte und parodierte Kureishi zu Anfang v. a. die Spannung zwischen westlichen und muslimischen Lebenswelten im Alltag asiatischer Emigranten in London, drehen sich die jüngeren Werke zunehmend um Liebe und Sexualität.
